Identità ai margini tra Isole Faroe e Danimarca : Una lettura del romanzo Ø di Siri Ranva Hjelm Jacobsen

In her debut novel 'Ø' (2016; 'Island'), the Danish author Siri Ranva Hjelm Jacobsen presents the perspectives of different generations of migrants, from the narrator’s grandparents, who moved from the Faroe Islands to Denmark in the 1940s, to the present third-generation perspective of the first-person narrator. This essay focuses on the latter, investigating some fundamental issues in the narrator’s attempt to outline and define her identity and sense of ‘otherness’ on the boundary between Denmark and the Faroe Islands. The most relevant aspects include her relationship with her family and their shared memories, her self-perception as opposed to other people’s viewpoints, her search for a ‘home’, the role of language as an identity-defining factor, the myth of the ‘island’ as a metaphor for the narrator’s inquiry and her position in relation to others.

Nel suo romanzo d’esordio Ø (2016; Isola), la scrittrice danese Siri Ranva Hjelm Jacobsen intreccia i punti di vista di differenti generazioni di migranti, dai non-ni della voce narrante, trasferitisi dalle Isole Faroe in Danimarca negli anni ’40 del Novecento, alla prospettiva attuale della narratrice, appartenente alla “terza generazio-ne”. Questo studio si concentra su quest’ultima, indagando le principali problematiche che emergono nel tentativo di delineare e definire la propria identità e il proprio senso di estraneità ai margini tra Danimarca e Isole Faroe. Tra gli aspetti più rilevanti emer-gono le relazioni familiari e le memorie condivise; la percezione di sé in contrasto con lo sguardo altrui; l’anelito a un luogo che sia “casa”; il ruolo della lingua come fattore identitario; il mito dell’isola come metafora per la ricerca e la posizione della narratrice in relazione al mondo e agli altri.
