Santa Sede, cattolici americani e Israele : A proposito di un recente libro di Adrian Ciani

  This note examines the main new contributions of the Canadian historian Adrian Ciani in his recent volume, "Contesting Zion. The Vatican, American Catholics, and the Partition of Palestine," situating them within a long and stratifi ed historiographical tradition. Drawing on extensive archival research and a comprehensive command of the relevant scholarship, the book constitutes a significant advance in the study of Catholic positions towards the partition of Palestine, the establishment of the State of Israel, and, above all, the subsequent debate over the internationalization of Jerusalem. In particular, Ciani’s analysis compellingly demonstrates how the Holy See – supported decisively by American Catholic circles – could shape discussions at the United Nations through a strategically crafted lobbying effort.
