Against Nicostratus is a speech providing a wealth of insights into Athenian social, economic and legal history. As a response to the analysis offered by Philipp Scheibelreiter in his essay, the paper focuses on a limited number of issues, including the background of Apollodorus' feud with Nicostratus and his brothers, Nicostratus' social standing as a "client" of Apollodorus, the loans Nicostratus had to make to be to pay the money for his ransom and the very reasons underlying the story of a betrayed friendship recounted in the speech.
