The article examines lubok monsters: fantastical, mythological, and fairy-tale creatures from the visual space of early Russian popular prints. The hallmark of monstrosity is a terrifying deviation from the natural order of things. Monsters are hybrid formations that violate the laws of nature; they are composed of heterogeneous elements, which may include, for example, body parts of humans and animals of various kinds; monstrosi-ty can also manifest in the deformation of various body parts. A classifi-cation of lubok monsters has been conducted, grouped into the catego-ries: 1) monstrous peoples; 2) zoomorphic chimeras; 3) anthropo-zoomorphic chimeras (Antiquity); 4) anthropo-zoomorphic chimeras (Modern Times); 5) monstrous prodigies; 6) “monsters” (deformities).
