Between the end of the 4th century and the early decades of the 3rd century BC, the cities of Amorgos took out a number of loans granted by private individuals. What must have been a crisis (perhaps agricultural?) for the three poleis on the island is documented by the existence of six inscriptions recording loan contracts: five of such contacts concern Arkesine, and one concerns the three cities together (Migeotte, Emprunt nos. 49-54). The creditors are always individuals acting alone or in very small groups and, in almost all cases, certainly from outside the island. The contracts have similar characteristics and clauses in common, but also significant differences. A critical analysis of their structure, the parties involved, the guarantees, the risk assessment, and the presence of international law provisions will aim to highlight the uniqueness of this set of documents, on which a rich tradition of studies has been established over time.
