Energy expenditure

Physical Activity (PAA) can be accurately measured when the energy cost (C) of that form of locomotion is known. C depends on the speed and the mode of locomotion. C of a given form of locomotion, and at a given speed, depends also on all those factors that can further affect W or η. The literature provides all the data needed to calculate C in cyclic-type forms of locomotion and in all possible “conditions” (e. g. sedentary and athletes, males and females; young and elderly; healthy or impaired; flat terrain or incline; firm or compliant surfaces …). Thus, even if some care is needed to take into account all these variables, it is indeed possible to accurately prescribe PAA to different populations according to their specific needs.
