Zootechnical dynamics in the Byzantine emporia of the North Adriatic Sea: comparison between the site of Rab (Croatia) and Ca’ Vendramin Calergi (Venice) through zooar- chaeological and stable isotope analyses. In this study, we aim to analyze and compare the zooarchaeological dynamics between two distinct Byzantine sites located in the Up- per Adriatic: Rab, Croatia, active between the 6th and 8th centuries AD, and Ca’ Vendra- min Calergi, Venice, during the period from the 7th to the 11th centuries AD. The zooar- chaeological analysis of faunal samples has revealed not only common aspects and differences in animal management and exploitation of the territory but also placed the collected data within a broader Early Medieval faunal framework, composed of coastal Adriatic sites that maintained contact with the Byzantine Empire in different ways and times. The results enrich knowledge about the breeding practices of the main domestic species, economic dynamics, and cultural interactions in the North Adriatic Sea during the Byzantine era. Concurrently, stable isotope analyses of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) were conducted on faunal samples to investigate the feeding systems of the main domestic species in the two sites. Moreover, to deepen understanding of the dietary habits adopted by the communities under study, the same isotopic analyses were ex- tended to the bones of six individuals from the late Roman and Early Medieval periods originating from the Rab site (Dinka Dokule and Banjol). Despite the identification of var- ious marine taxa among the food remains, stable isotope analyses did not reveal signifi- cant fish consumption by humans.
