Here, we argue that the importance of studying ultra-marathon performance is threefold. First, since ultra-marathon pushes the boundaries of human endurance performance (exposing participants to significant physiological stresses), it is a valuable model to investigate the adaptive responses to both extreme loads and stresses on the human body. Second, it would help to identify potential and detrimental physiological variations related to these events, pinpointing potential adverse reactions to multiple regulatory and physiological systems. Finally, it would help to inform aspects of training preparation and/or minimize the risk of overuse injuries, leading to better evidence-based training methodologies and injury prevention techniques.

Abstract
Here, we argue that the importance of studying ultra-marathon performance is threefold. First, since ultra-marathon pushes the boundaries of human endurance performance (exposing participants to significant physiological stresses), it is a valuable model to investigate the adaptive responses to both extreme loads and stresses on the human body. Second, it would help to identify potential and detrimental physiological variations related to these events, pinpointing potential adverse reactions to multiple regulatory and physiological systems. Finally, it would help to inform aspects of training preparation and/or minimize the risk of overuse injuries, leading to better evidence-based training methodologies and injury prevention techniques.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
