In this issue, we aim to rethink school as a social space—first and foremost because criticism of the Italian education system has become almost routine in recent years. It is frequently challenged for its outdated curricula, disengaging and ineffective teaching methods, and inadequate assessment practices (Corsini, 2023; Grion et al., 2021). Further criticism targets the contentious processes around teacher training and recruitment, the deteriorating condition of school infrastructure, rampant bureaucratization,and the continual stream of reforms and decrees that hinder long-term educational planning.Prompted by these reflections—and by others articulated more explicitly in the various contributions to this special issue—we offer several visions of education designed to break through this paralysis.

Abstract

In this issue, we aim to rethink school as a social space—first and foremost because criticism of the Italian education system has become almost routine in recent years.
