The essay examines Antonio Stoppani as a lecturer and scientific popu larizer in late nineteenth-century Italy, focusing on the transcription of his lectures into printed volumes. Drawing on contemporary accounts, newspaper reports, and an analysis of Acqua ed aria (1881; first edition 1875 under a different title), it reconstructs Stop pani’s oratorical techniques – combining scientific rigor with an affable tone, modesty with authority – and explores how these same strategies are reflected on the printed page. His lectures, attended by a socially diverse audience with a strong female presence, not only disseminated knowledge of the natural sciences but also created a dialogue trans posed into his books, where readers and listeners become complementary figures. The analysis shows how Stoppani alternated between different registers to engage both experts and “simple curious minds,” fostering wonder and the pleasure of discovery, and building a bridge between oral dissemination, scientific publishing, and literary culture.
