The paper examines the characteristics of ‘performative realism’ in Die Nibelungen. Ein deutscher Stummfilm (2021) and Fieber 17 (2021) by Felicitas Hoppe. It explores above all the following issues: Which textual elements are dominant to this particular form of realism? What role is played by the interaction of fact and fiction? What are the functions of meta-reflection, cultural reference and intertextuality? The answer to these questions makes it possible to understand the two texts – and Hoppe’s oeuvre in general – within the framework of contemporary German literature, especially postmodernism and post-postmodernism.
