The first part examines the relationship between fiction writers and the advent of the internet, highlighting the limited interest shown by much 21st-century fiction in the online world, as well as the prevalence of negative representations of the web. Starting from readers’ reviews, the article then shifts to place the internet at the center of the reading of Cooper’s novel, proposing to view the web not only as a structural feature but also as a central thematic element. The main narratological implications that stem from this dominance are explored. In the second part, the article investigates the work’s complex immediacy, marked by the absence of any external narrative framing. Finally, it sheds light on the dynamics between users referred to as ‘literalists’ and those called ‘fantasists’, offering an interpretation of the novel.

L’articolo discute di alcune questioni narratologiche e interpretative centrali in The Sluts di Dennis Cooper a partire dalla particolare struttura narrativa del romanzo, costruito per buona parte attraverso recensioni e post su un forum online. Nella prima parte del lavoro si osservano i rapporti fra gli scrittori e l’avvento della rete, notando in particolare lo scarso interesse verso di essa da parte di tanta fiction del XXI secolo e la centralità delle rappresentazioni negative di internet. Successivamente, a partire dalle recensioni dei lettori, si pone invece internet al centro della lettura del romanzo di Cooper, proponendo di leggere la rete come elemento caratterizzante non solo in senso strutturale, ma anche tematico. Si esaminano poi le principali questioni narratologiche che discendono da questa dominante. Nella seconda parte del lavoro viene invece esplorata la questione dell’immediatezza complessa dell’opera, priva di cornici narrative esterne, con i suoi portati ermeneutici.
