Recent archaeological investigations in north-western Arabia and in the Negev Desert have reshaped our perception of ancient trade in this arid region, but a more complete understanding of these networks of exchange requires greater focus on smaller sites that have traditionally been passed over in favour of excavation at larger archaeological sites. Khirbet al- Khalde, situated in the Wadi al-Yutm 26 km north- east of Aqaba along the Via Nova Traiana, however, offers a good case study of what can be accomplished through short, but intensive multi-scalar surveys at smaller sites. The site consists of the remains of a cas- tellum next to a presumed caravanserai and has been known in Western scientific literature since the nine- teenth century. Despite its research potential, the first comprehensive and systematic survey was only carried out in 2023 by an international team. This contribu- tion presents new and reassesses old evidence from the site of Khirbet al-Khalde through an account of the research undertaken there.
