The Nordic Council of Ministers has provided funding for a four-year program on nature-based solutions in the Nordic Region as part of the 2030 vision for a greener Nordic region. According to the United Nations and IUCN (2016), nature-based solutions (NbS) are "actions to protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural or modified ecosystems that address societal challenges effectively and adaptively, while simultaneously providing benefits to biodiversity and human well-being." Nature-based solutions encompass a wide range of activities, including the preservation, sustainable use, and restoration of ecosystems to preserve and restore their functions, thereby addressing societal issues such as food security, biodiversity loss, climate change adaptation, and climate change mitigation.
