Alle fonti di un cold case medievale: frammenti su frate Pietro da Verona

The essay examines some sources related to the construction of the ark of saint Peter martyr, executed in 1339 by Giovanni di Balduccio and nowadays in the Portinari Chapel in the church of Sainct Eustogio in Milan, using particularly the account books of the inquisitors who devolved a lot of money for it, then focuses on the protagonists of the sculptural group, and finally on the bas relief representing the murder finding out the source on which is based that is to say the dependence of the monument from the document. The written sources are almost completely lost apart from two testimonies – among the oldest survived of the Mendicant inquisition in Italy – relating the costs of the organization of the killing of the inquisitor Peter of Verona. The critical edition of such testimonies shows that the different copies survived offer significant variations and the one most used by the scholars is far from being the most reliable.

Il contributo affronta alcune fonti relative alla costruzione dell’arca di san Pietro martire del 1339, opera di Giovanni di Balduccio attualmente nella cappella Portinari della chiesa di Sant’Eustorgio di Milano, in particolar modo i libri contabili degli inquisitori che contribuiscono in maniera rilevante, poi approfondisce i personaggi scolpiti e infine la formella della morte individuando la fonte da cui è tratta ovvero la dipendenza del monumento dal documento. La documentazione scritta è quasi completamente perduta a parte due interrogatori – tra i più antichi dell’inquisizione Mendicante in Italia – relativi alle spese per l’organizzazione dell’uccisione dell’inquisitore Pietro da Verona. L’edizione critica delle due testimonianze mostra che le differenti copie superstiti offrono varianti significative e quella più usata dagli studiosi non è certamente la più affidabile.
