L’istituzione dell’aerarium sanctum tra crisi debitoria ed emergenze militari

Ancient sources testify to the establishment, in the middle of the 4th century BC, of a special section of Rome’s public treasury (the so-called aerarium sanctum), which could be drawn on in times of great danger of war. Modern scholars have taken a particularly critical at- titude towards these traditions and consider the institution of the aerarium sanctum incoherent with the historical, economic, social and finally military context in which the sources place it. A review of the whole issue will make it possible not only to demonstrate that the introduction of this type of treasury in the mid-4th century is entirely plausible, but also to better sketch cer- tain aspects of the society of Rome in the 4th century BC.

Le fonti antiche testimoniano l’istituzione, alla metà del IV secolo a.C., di una sezio- ne speciale della cassa pubblica di Roma (il cosiddetto aerarium sanctum), a cui sarebbe stato possibile attingere in momenti di grande pericolo bellico. La critica moderna ha assunto un atteggiamento critico nei confronti di questa tradizione, poiché si è ritenuto che essa fosse inco- erente rispetto al contesto storico, economico, sociale ed infine militare in cui le fonti, pure con- cordemente, collocano l’aerarium sanctum. Una revisione dell’intera questione permetterà non solo di dimostrare che l’introduzione di questo tipo di cassa alla metà del IV secolo è del tutto verosimile e quindi che le fonti ad essa relative sono affidabili, ma anche di meglio tratteggiare alcuni aspetti della società della Roma del IV secolo a.C.
