In this contribution, I intend to deal with the notion of citizenship in early Greece. In recent scholarship, the need has been stressed for research on citizenship ‘to take new paths’, to the effect that ‘to enquire into early Greek citizenship can only mean to pay attention to the historical processes that led archaic communities to define themselves and to implement participation in group life at the religious, military and social level’. In other words, citizenship needs to be analysed not with a ‘legalistic approach’ but as a set of ‘social practices and collective representations’ that should not be reduced just to legal distinctions. I wonder, however, whether it is in this case conceptually correct to contrast an institutional, ‘legalistic’ approach with a sociological one. Once we acknowledge that ‘institutions work through three modes of constraint’, in other terms ‘rules, practices and narratives’, the two perspectives immediately prove to be tightly entwined rather than antithetical. By taking into consideration the cases of Athens and Gortyn, I will show how the notion of institutionalisation can help redress a more balanced picture of early Greek citizenship.
