The discovery of the settlement of Incoronata di Metaponto (MT) in 1971 had a decisive impact on the historical and archaeological debate surrounding the emergence, amidst the general mobility of the Mediterranean region, of what is generally termed the protocolonial’ phenomenon, which saw the integration of different cultures and resulted in interesting outcomes in terms of co-habitation and shared management of territory and resources. During the more than 50 years which have elapsed since the discovery, innumerable investigations have been carried out on the finds and features from the plateau of so-called Greek Incoronata, some of which have recently adopted widely differing hermeneutic positions. In this context, the present paper reexamines the main problems that have emerged and explains the interpretations, past and present, proposed by Piero Orlandini’s team from the Università degli Studi di Milano, which conducted excavations at the site between 1974 and 1995, including new findings from recent reappraisals of hitherto unpublished material.

Abstract
In this context, the present paper reexamines the main problems that have emerged and explains the interpretations, past and present, proposed by Piero Orlandini’s team from the Università degli Studi di Milano, which conducted excavations at the site between 1974 and 1995, including new findings from recent reappraisals of hitherto unpublished material.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
