The two papyrus fragments (P. Köln. 23453 and 23467), published by Gronewald and Daniel in 2004 from successive columns of a roll, recovered from a mummy cartonnage, helped to supplement an older fragment of Sappho, known as fr. 58 V. from the Oxyrhynchus papyrus, and also raised new questions about the text of this Sapphic fragment. Much debate and discussion focuses on considerations of division, whether at the beginning and ending of poems, or on possibilities for the grouping of verses transmitted by both manuscripts into poems. Therefore, inspite lots of differences between the two manuscripts that overlap only for their middle part (lines 11-22 of P. Oxy. and lines 9-20 of P. Köln.), considered as an independent Sapphic poem, the present article proposes showing some common elements concerning graphic and metrical uses that make similar the first parts of the two papyri, in order to know their real story.
