Giuseppe Baretti’s Easy phraseology, for the use of young ladies, who intend to learn the colloquial part of the Italian language (London, 1775) is the printed version of his manuscript collection of dialogues in Italian and English originally written for one single student, Hetty or Esteruccia, the young daughter of Henry and Hester Thrale. Although no further editions were published in Britain, the book was reissued in Italy in the following century: the edition published in Turin in 1835 was followed by the Leghorn one of 1836. The present paper aims to explain why and how far Easy phraseology was readapted to attract a fresh, different readership – Italian young students of English instead of British young female students of Italian

Abstract
Giuseppe Baretti’s Easy phraseology, for the use of young ladies, who intend to learn the colloquial part of the Italian language (London, 1775) is the printed version of his manuscript collection of dialogues in Italian and English originally written for one single student, Hetty or Esteruccia, the young daughter of Henry and Hester Thrale. Although no further editions were published in Britain, the book was reissued in Italy in the following century: the edition published in Turin in 1835 was followed by the Leghorn one of 1836. The present paper aims to explain why and how far Easy phraseology was readapted to attract a fresh, different readership – Italian young students of English instead of British young female students of Italian| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
