This paper investigates the expansion of distance learning within the Italian university system, with particular attention to the emergence and consolidation of telematic universities. Through the integration of existing literature and data from the national student registry, it examines the socio-demographic and territorial characteristics of students enrolled in online degree programs, alongside their preferences for instructional modes. The findings point to specific student profiles and a marked concentration of telematic enrollment in Southern Italy.
