L'Amatorius di Plutarco. Eros platonico e amore coniugale

The Amatorius is a unique work by Plutarch, where a lively narrative style, en- dowed with literary and thematic elements closely resembling comedy and romance, is coupled with an original interpretation of Platonic eros. The goal that Plutarch sets for himself in the Amatorius is complex and fraught with difficulties, because on the one side he seeks to preserve the core elements of Plato’s idea of eros (with explicit references to Symposium and Phaedrus), on the other he aims to reconcile the ethical, pedagogical, and metaphysical aspects of Platonic eros with the marital love. In fact, he conceived eros as a sexual and equal relationship that ignores the traditional disparity between lover and beloved, thus making it possible for women as well to partake in the highest form of love. The result is an unprecedented version of Platonic eros that far surpasses, in both its articu- lation and complexity, the scant and conventional treatments of eros found in the survived contemporary philosophical literature.

L’Amatorius è una singolare operetta di Plutarco, che si distingue sia per la vi- vacità narrativa, con movenze letterarie e tematiche che ricordano da vicino la commedia e il romanzo, sia per l’originale versione dell’eros platonico che Plutarco vi esprime. L’opera- zione che egli intende svolgere nell’Amatorius è complessa e irta di difficoltà, perché se da un lato Plutarco ha interesse a preservare le linee portanti della concezione dell’eros ideata da Platone (con chiari riferimenti sia al Simposio sia al Fedro), dall’altro intende accomo- dare le istanze etiche, pedagogiche e metafisiche dell’eros platonico al legame coniugale, inteso come un eros sessuato e paritario, che elimina la disparità tradizionale tra amante e amato e concede la partecipazione al genere più elevato di amore anche alle donne. Il risul- tato è una versione inedita dell’eros platonico che supera di gran lunga, per articolazione e complessità, le scarne e convenzionali trattazioni dell’eros che troviamo nella letteratura filosofica coeva (almeno per quanto ci è rimasto).
