This paper reconstructs the central aspects of the historiographical debate surrounding research on the Second World War in recent decades and examines some of its repercussions in public discourse. The most recent academic production has developed the analysis of the ‘total war’, a concept considered crucial since the 1980s for understanding the complexity of the conflict and encouraging the renewal of themes, methods, and sources. This turning point is notably marked by the introduction of lemmas such as ‘civil resistance’ and ‘war without weapons’ into the historiographical lexicon. From political-military strategies and the vicissitudes of prisoners and deportees, the daily experiences of the civilian population facing the many emergencies of war, to the leading role played by women and children and territorial specificities, Italian historiography has proven capable of engaging with the most innovative trends in international debate. In particular, the question of the transition between Fascism, war and post-war has been among the most investigated topics, demonstrating the importance of measuring the impact of the conflict in the medium and long term. The most relevant developments in recent research, which are also reflected in public debate, concern the multiple implications of violence, the role of justice, and the uncertain path of individual and collective memory in the new context of republican democracy.

Abstract
The most relevant developments in recent research, which are also reflected in public debate, concern the multiple implications of violence, the role of justice, and the uncertain path of individual and collective memory in the new context of republican democracy.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
