The paper questions 20th-century social historians' assumption that the ẓurafāʾ ("dandies") portrayed in al-Washsha's Book of Brocade in the 4th/10th century were a social group. It highlights the dangers of confusing normative literature with descriptions of real social situations, at the same time illustrating the social issues that al-Washsha' does in fact discuss.
