Da S. Giovanni di Verdara a Wolfenbüttel: riflessioni intorno alla biblioteca di Pietro da Montagnana e all'Euripide nel Cod. Guelf. 15 Gud. graec.

Some of the manuscripts acquired by Marquard Gude from the Paduan monastery of S. Giovanni di Verdara and now in the Herzog August Bibliothek once belonged to Pietro da Montagnana. His collection (about 130 items on different topics) can be reconstructed on the basis of three inventories of the monastic library (1599, 1639, 1760), notae donationis and paleographic comparison. As shown by the Cod. Guelf. 15 Gud. graec., he would restore his codices, collate texts with other sources and add grammatical annotations (with characteristic notabene). The similarities between the interlinear translation of Hecuba in this manuscript and the fuller one in the manuscript in Venice, in the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, Lat. XIV 54 (4328) reveal that both probably are independent ad litteram translations. In the Appendix (pp. 212-216), the identity of "Petrus de Montagnana" - the doctor depicted in a famous plate from the De Gregori (1494) edition of the Fasciculus medicinae - is discussed.

Nel fondo Gudiano della Herzog August Bibliothek di Wolfenbüttel sono oggi conservati alcuni manoscritti provenienti dal monastero di S. Giovanni di Verdara e precedentemente appartenuti a Pietro da Montagnana. La biblioteca dell'umanista (circa 130 esemplari di contenuto eterogeneo) può essere ricostruita attraverso gli inventari del monastero (1599, 1639, 1760), le notae donationis e l'esame paleografico. Come dimostra il Guelf. 15 Gud. Graec., egli restaurava materialmente i codici e collazionava con cura i testi con altre fonti, apponeva commenti grammaticali, notabilia e peculiari notabene e, talvolta, aggiungeva una traduzione interlineare, che, almeno in questo caso, si rivela non del tutto originale. Nell'Appendice (pp. 212-216) si discute dell'identità del medico "Petrus de Montagnana" raffigurato in una celebre tavola dell'edizione De Gregori (1494) del Fasciculus medicinae.
