This article explores the perceptions of conditionality mechanisms linked to the Italian Citizenship Income (Reddito di Cittadinanza) among benefaiciaries living in marginal areas, with a focus on Taranto, an indus- trial city in southern Italy. Using 39 semi-structured interviews conducted between 2019 and 2021, the study highlights how recipients interpret and negotiate the obligations imposed by the policy, particularly regarding paid employment. The findings reveal a dual stance: while many beneficiaries legitimize conditionality to distinguish themselves from perceived “exploit- ers” of the system, they simultaneously emphasize the need for dignified work aligned with their aspirations. The research also underscores the para- dox of implementing conditionality in a socio-economic context marked by scarce and precarious job opportunities. By shedding light on the lived experiences of beneficiaries, the study contributes to a deeper understand- ing of the implications of conditional social policies in economically vul- nerable settings, offering insights into their effectiveness and challenges.

Abstract
By shedding light on the lived experiences of beneficiaries, the study contributes to a deeper understand- ing of the implications of conditional social policies in economically vul- nerable settings, offering insights into their effectiveness and challenges.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
