In the last decade, voter participation has shown a consistent decline, both in Italy and in all the Western countries. Electoral disengagement has been shaped by three key factors - demobilitation, protest and apathy - that have determined today’s extreme low level of turnout. In this article we aim to explore the deeper motivations behind this electoral’s growing abstensionism. We also aim to assess whether this trend is likely to persist or it could be reversed by changes in political proposals and communication strategies.

Abstract

In the last decade, voter participation has shown a consistent decline, both in Italy and in all the Western countries. Electoral disengagement has been shaped by three key factors - demobilitation, protest and apathy - that have determined today’s extreme low level of turnout. In this article we aim to explore the deeper motivations behind this electoral’s growing abstensionism. We also aim to assess whether this trend is likely to persist or it could be reversed by changes in political proposals and communication strategies.
