Il tempo dei consoli : Alcune riflessioni sull’inizio dell’anno consolare in età mediorepubblicana

The text examines the variations in the official beginning of the consular year during the Midrepublican period. The sources are clear that from 153 BC the consuls took office on January 1, but there are strong doubts about the earlier period. In particular, if we can be fairly sure that in 329 the con- suls took office on July 1, it seems that for the following century two va- riations were introduced: one which fixed the beginning of the magistracy in the autumn, the other which brought it forward to the spring season. On the basis of a confrontation between the literary sources (in particular Livy) and the data provided by the Fasti triumphales, some considerations are proposed here in order to identify the moments when these shifts took place and the reasons (mainly political) behind them.

Il testo prende in esame le variazioni cui andò incontro la data d’inizio uf-ficiale dell’anno consolare in età mediorepubblicana. Le fonti sono chiare nell’affermare che a partire dal 153 a.C. i consoli entrarono in carica il 1° gennaio, mentre sul periodo precedente sussistono forti dubbi. In parti-colare, se possiamo essere abbastanza certi sul fatto che nel 329 i consoli entrassero in carica il 1° luglio, per il secolo successivo sembra che venis-sero introdotte due variazioni: una che fissò l’inizio della magistratura in epoca autunnale, l’altra che l’anticipò alla stagione primaverile. Attraverso un confronto incrociato tra le fonti letterarie (in particolare Livio) e i dati trasmessi dai Fasti trionfali, si propongono qui alcune riflessioni per iden-tificare i momenti in cui avvennero tali spostamenti, e le ragioni (eminen-temente politiche) ad essi sottese.
