Relying on the qualitative analysis of the ELT textbooks currently used in Chinese general senior high schools, this proposal aim at displaying the exam-oriented reality of basic Chinese ELT and the inconsistency that exists between the guidelines provided by the General High School English Curriculum Standards (MOE, 2020) and the nature of the English paper which is part of the ‘National College Entrance Examination’. This inconsistency is reflected in the content of Chinese ELT textbooks, which are the product of a mixture of Grammar-Translation Method and Communicative Approach.
