In the preface, the volume editors reflect on some central aspects of "The Sorrows of Young Werther" (1774) and its long fortune in contexts, languages and media from the 18th century to the present day. The project organised around the jubilee of Goethe's novel in 2024, which also gave rise to this collection of contributions within the framework of the scholarly journal ‘Cultura tedesca’, is thus reconstructed.
