Il PSI e la questione settentrionale

The Italian Socialist Party (Psi) was undoubtedly one of the linchpins of the political system in the 1980s, particularly rooted in the city of Milan. This article shows how the socialists were among the first to recognise the emergence of a new, and in many ways unforeseen, ‘Northern Question’ alongside the usual ‘Southern Question’. Faced with the advance of the Northern leagues, the Psi chose the path of frontal opposition. At the same time, however, it attempted to revive the regionalist hypothesis and to weaken the Lega’s challenge by at- tacking it on its own ground.

Il Partito socialista fu indiscutibilmente uno dei perni del sistema politico de- gli anni Ottanta, particolarmente radicato nella città di Milano. Questo saggio mostra come i socialisti furono tra i primi ad accorgersi dell’emergere, accanto alla consueta «questione meridionale» di una nuova, e per molti versi imprevi- sta, «questione settentrionale». Di fronte all’avanzata delle leghe, il Psi craxiano scelse la strada della contrapposizione frontale. Al tempo stesso, tuttavia, esso cercò anche di rilanciare le ipotesi regionaliste, provando a depotenziare la con- testazione leghista, sfidandola sul suo terreno.
