As Mauro Carbone states, screens are ambiguous objects. In this paper I want to deal with a particular kind of ambivalence in literary reading by focusing on the potential effects of the transition from reading on paper to reading on screen. In particular, I want to consider the issue of immersion, recalling Rita Felski’s stance that engagement is fundamental for the aesthetic experience. While empirical studies fail to recognize any kind of difference between screen and paper regarding the issue of engagement, my aim is to broaden horizons showing the effects of hyper-reading and discussing the crisis of attention. At the end of this article, I will briefly notice that the ‘problem of reading’ is a social, instead of individual, problem.

Abstract
As Mauro Carbone states, screens are ambiguous objects. In this paper I want to deal with a particular kind of ambivalence in literary reading by focusing on the potential effects of the transition from reading on paper to reading on screen. In particular, I want to consider the issue of immersion, recalling Rita Felski’s stance that engagement is fundamental for the aesthetic experience. While empirical studies fail to recognize any kind of difference between screen and paper regarding the issue of engagement, my aim is to broaden horizons showing the effects of hyper-reading and discussing the crisis of attention. At the end of this article, I will briefly notice that the ‘problem of reading’ is a social, instead of individual, problem.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
