During the early Hellenistic Age, the elephant headdress became a symbol of power of Alexander the Great. The gesture of wearing the elephant headdress and replacing it to the spoils of the Nemean lion represented since the end of the 4th century BC a powerful symbol of the Conqueror. Through a long-lasting process of transformation, the elephant spoils would later become emblems of specific places (e.g., Alexandria and Africa), losing their original association with Alexander. This presentation aims to explore the diachronic changes in the depiction and meaning of that symbol of power.

Abstract
During the early Hellenistic Age, the elephant headdress became a symbol of power of Alexander the Great. The gesture of wearing the elephant headdress and replacing it to the spoils of the Nemean lion represented since the end of the 4th century BC a powerful symbol of the Conqueror. Through a long-lasting process of transformation, the elephant spoils would later become emblems of specific places (e.g., Alexandria and Africa), losing their original association with Alexander. This presentation aims to explore the diachronic changes in the depiction and meaning of that symbol of power.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
