Adam, who was a regular canon, then a black monk, and finally a white monk, was the second abbot the the Cistercian monastery of Perseigne, between 1188 and 1221. The article critically examines what we know of his life and contributes significant changes to the biography prepared by Jean Bouvet in 1958, which is not always treated with a critical eye, even in recent studies. Notably, the idea of his lowly birth in Champagne and his identification with the chaplain of Countess Marie de Champagne should definitely be rejected. The analysis and visual representation of the social contacts of the abbot portrayed in his letters allow the corroboration or rejection of certain hypotheses concerning where his career took place before his election as abbot of Perseigne.

Abstract
Adam, who was a regular canon, then a black monk, and finally a white monk, was the second abbot the the Cistercian monastery of Perseigne, between 1188 and 1221. The article critically examines what we know of his life and contributes significant changes to the biography prepared by Jean Bouvet in 1958, which is not always treated with a critical eye, even in recent studies. Notably, the idea of his lowly birth in Champagne and his identification with the chaplain of Countess Marie de Champagne should definitely be rejected. The analysis and visual representation of the social contacts of the abbot portrayed in his letters allow the corroboration or rejection of certain hypotheses concerning where his career took place before his election as abbot of Perseigne.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
