Francescani e matematica : Il caso di Mariotto Guiducci, frate minore e maestro d'abaco (1427- post 1496)

The paper focuses on the figure of Mariotto Guiducci, a Florentine franciscan friar and abacus master from the 15 th century, author of a mathematical treatise preserved in the National Li- brary of Florence. By archival and bibliographical records, the case study may offer further in- sights about the relationship between Franciscanism, mathematics and a culture of accounting during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The paper opens a glimpse into the Guiducci fam- ily and the teaching of practical mathematics in Florence and Prato, hinting at the convent life and experience of Mariotto; finally, the paper concerns the Libro d’arismetricha, expression of a mathematical culture typical of the abacus tradition.

Il contributo intende tracciare un profilo del fiorentino Mariotto Guiducci, frate minore e ma- estro d’abaco del XV secolo, autore di un trattato matematico conservato alla Biblioteca Nazio- nale di Firenze. Attraverso risultanze archivistiche e bibliografiche, il caso di studio può offrire ulteriori spunti per una riflessione intorno al tema dei rapporti francescanesimo / matemati- ca / contabilità fra medioevo e rinascimento. L’indagine proposta apre uno squarcio sulla fami- glia Guiducci e l’insegnamento della matematica pratica a Firenze e a Prato, accennando alla vita conventuale e all’esperienza di insegnante di fra Mariotto; infine, si offre una scheda del Libro d’arismetricha, espressione di una cultura matematica tipica della tradizione abacistica.
