Vere storie di medioevi falsi : esempi, pretesti, metodologie

The authors of the essays in this volume have focused their attention on the world of forgeries: forgeries produced in the Middle Ages and modern forgeries of the Middle Ages themselves. Thanks to this ‘broad’ approach, the collected contributions propose not one but several Middle Ages: the Middle Ages of historical reality, of course, but described not directly but allowed to emerge by contrast, like a photographic negative that is outlined through the contours of Middle Ages that never existed, and no less completely real in the minds of those who believe in them. These invented, denied, manipulated Middle Ages may be fakes, but the stories that tell them are entirely true.

Autrici e autori dei saggi confluiti in questo volume hanno appuntato la loro attenzione sul mondo dei falsi: falsi prodotti in età medievale e falsificazioni moderne del medioevo stesso. Grazie a questo approccio “largo”, i contributi raccolti propongono non uno ma più medioevi: il medioevo della realtà storica, certo, descritto però non in maniera diretta ma lasciato emergere per contrasto, come un negativo fotografico che si delinea attraverso il contorno di medioevi mai esistiti, e non di meno del tutto reali nella mente di chi ci crede. Questi medioevi inventati, negati, manipolati, saranno pure dei falsi, ma le storie che li raccontano sono del tutto vere.
