Os vellos non debem de namorarse : Il sorriso malinconico di Castelao nel suo esilio argentino

I.M.M. Bajini
2014

Os vellos non debem de namorarse is the only dramatic text by Alfonso Daniel Rod- ríguez Castelao, an important Galician artist and patriot, who went into exile in Argentina after the Spanish Civil War. The play was staged with great success in Buenos Aires in 1941 and subse- quently in Galizia in 1961, and is regarded as one of the most important Galician plays of all times. The play can be considered part of an ambitious and complex cultural project aiming at creating an arte de mañán, an ‘art of tomorrow’, able to reach the public and change its tastes. The cultural influences underlying Os vellos are varied: on the one hand, the work is the result of a careful revi- sion of the Spanish musical and folkloric tradition; like García Lorca, Castelao revisits the tradition of the Spanish theatre of the Renaissance. On the other hand, the play shows the peculiar sensibil- ity of Castelao toward the European avant-garde.
