Abstract

The symbolism of colours appears in several proverbs. This contribution aims to analyse some expressions that contain the colours white, black, or both, to show that, contrary to popular belief in Western culture, white is not always associated with positive situations or black with negative. The examples are taken from the Thesaurus proverbiorum medii aevi, mainly from the Germanic area.
