This paper discusses the dual mythic dimension of Fernando Pessoa as a symbol of universal significance after his death and as a poet-symbol of Portugal. Eduardo Lourenço’s hermeneutic reflection focuses on these two aspects of Pessoa. While Pessoa’s critical and editorial success abroad is undisputed, especially due to widespread translations and in Brazil, the domestication of Pessoa’s identity in Portugal as part of the Pessoa myth remains a complex and unresolved chapter in the history of his canonization.

Abstract

This paper discusses the dual mythic dimension of Fernando Pessoa as a symbol of universal significance after his death and as a poet-symbol of Portugal. Eduardo Lourenço’s hermeneutic reflection focuses on these two aspects of Pessoa. While Pessoa’s critical and editorial success abroad is undisputed, especially due to widespread translations and in Brazil, the domestication of Pessoa’s identity in Portugal as part of the Pessoa myth remains a complex and unresolved chapter in the history of his canonization.
