The efforts toward a decarbonization of the shipping industry, promoted by the IMO and the European Union, will have a severe impact on the way ships will have to be operated and impose significant additional costs on shipowners. Achieving the desired results will require an enhanced level of cooperation between the parties (owners and charterers), whilst also providing an acceptable allocation of costs and liabilities. In order to provide models for such coopera- tion, BIMCO has drafted several clauses, which will be examined in this article.
