The article analyses the standard of living of a noble Veronese family between the 1820s and 1850s, when the city was part of the Lombardo-Veneto Kingdom. The study draws mainly upon the household budgets (intended for internal and non-fiscal use) with a focus on expenses, considered more reliable economic indicators than income for estimating material well-being. By examining expenditure type, amount, and trend over the years under investigation it has been possible to reconstruct the strategy behind the consumption of the Del Bene family, which consisted at the time of a widowed mother and her five children. While a small part of the expenses went to satisfy basic necessities, the rest was used for secondary needs that for the Del Bene were quite entirely the children’s education, from private lessons for both sons and daughters to very expensive boarding schools. Great emphasis was therefore placed on education and culture, which was not a lever for upward social mobility but a form of self-affirmation and responsibility. The mother Marianna’s expenditures were not geared toward conspicuous consumption and ostentation, as valued by part of the old nobility, but rather toward an invisible, long-term asset that would allow her children to consciously manage their their wealth and perhaps hold public office in the service of the community.

Abstract
The mother Marianna’s expenditures were not geared toward conspicuous consumption and ostentation, as valued by part of the old nobility, but rather toward an invisible, long-term asset that would allow her children to consciously manage their their wealth and perhaps hold public office in the service of the community.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
