This essay concerns the use of Shakespeare on film in the classroom and proposes a lesson plan in which “The Tempest” and two film adaptations (Peter Stow’s and Derek Jarman’s) are presented to the students and analysed. The aim is to use adaptation theory in order to debunk the hegemony of primary texts.
