Produrre ceramica nel Valdarno pisano tra XVII e XX secolo: i dati delle recenti indagini archivistiche e archeologiche a Calcinaia

The restoration project of the Coccapani’s pottery workshop in Calcinaia (Valdarno, Pisa) took place between 2011 and 2013 and it allowed to study in depth one of the notable ceramic productions for this area from the late 17th to the early 20th century. Thanks to the already known documents and the identification of other unpublished sources, on the basis of the large amount of production wastes and firing supports recovered in stratigraphic investigations and of the study of the kilns structures during the restoration of the complex, it was possible to define the processes and the ways of production, as well as the types and chronology of ceramics in modern ages. It was also possible to preserve or rebuild small parts of the buildings and kilns after a philological documentation to make possible the musealization of the productive complex and of the archaeological finds related to the Coccapani manufacture, in a itinerary designed to enhance the value of this piece of history of Valdarno.

Tra il 2011 e il 2013 ha avuto luogo un progetto di recupero delle fornaci per ceramica del complesso “Coccapani” a Calcinaia, nel Valdarno pisano, che ha consentito di studiare in maniera approfondita una delle produzioni di fittili di rilievo per questo comprensorio tra la fine del XVII e gli inizi del XX secolo. Grazie alla rilettura di documenti noti e all’individuazione di altri inediti, sulla scorta della elevata quantità di scarti e degli strumenti di produzione recuperati nelle indagini stratigrafiche e in base allo studio delle strutture durante le fasi di restauro del complesso, è stato possibile definire i luoghi e i modi della produzione, oltre ai tipi e alle cronologie delle ceramiche realizzate a Calcinaia in età moderna e contemporanea. Inoltre è stato possibile preservare o ricostruire piccole parti delle strutture dopo un rilievo filologico al fine di giungere alla loro musealizzazione insieme all’esposizione dei reperti legati alla manifattura Coccapani, in un percorso pensato per dare valore a questo pezzo di storia del Valdarno.
