Michael Matzke e le monete medievali della Toscana

In this paper we intend to honour the figure of Michael Matzke by referring to his fundamental contributions to the knowledge of Italian medieval coins and in particular of those from the Tuscan area. After recalling his work on various themes, either conducted in his research or deployed with advices and exchanges with the writers, we address the study of coin lists in «pratiche di mercatura» and «libri d’abaco» as an aid to the study of Tuscan grossi issued in the 13th century. In spite of the difficulties in identifying the relationships between the real coins and those indicated in these sources, some interpretations and identifications are proposed, to be examined with future and further works, according to the systematic research and methods applied by Matzke himself.

In questo contributo si vuole onorare la figura di Michael Matzke attraverso il riferimento ai suoi contributi fondamentali per la conoscenza delle monete medievali italiane e in particolare di quelle dell’area toscana. Dopo averne ricordato il lavoro su varie tematiche, condotto con ricerche dirette o dispiegato in consigli e confronti con chi scrive, si affronta la lettura delle liste di monete in «pratiche di mercatura» e «libri d’abaco» come ausilio allo studio dei grossi toscani del XIII secolo. Nonostante le difficoltà nel ravvisare relazioni certe tra le monete indicate in queste fonti e le monete reali, vengono qui proposte alcune chiavi di lettura e possibili identificazioni da vagliare con futuri e ulteriori studi, secondo le ricerche sistematiche e le metodiche applicate dallo stesso Matzke
