The 19th and the beginning of the 20th century saw the dominance of German and Austrian – followed by Italian – legal scholarship in Europe, also within the field of Roman law. Beginning with the first decade of the 20th century, owing to the commitment and the scholarship of F. de Zulueta and W.W. Buckland, Regius Professor of Civil Law in Oxford and Cambridge respectively, Roman law scholarship begun to develop and occupy a prominent place in England as well, conducting a dialogue on an equal basis with that of continental Europe, particularly with Italy. The investigation of the personal libraries and correspondence between these two English scholars, on the one hand, and their Italian colleagues - in particular S. Riccobono – on the other hand, reveal a dense network of contacts and intense scientific exchanges, particularly in the period between the Wars.
l XIX e i primi decenni del XX sec. avevano visto l’affermarsi in Europa del dominio della scienza giuridica – in particolare quella romanistica – tedesca e austriaca, seguita da quella italiana. Solamente a partire dai primi decenni del Novecento, grazie all’impegno e alla qualità scientifica di F. de Zulueta e W.W. Buckland, Regius Professors of Civil Law rispettivamente a Oxford e Cambridge, anche in Inghilterra gli studi romanistici iniziarono a svilupparsi e ad occupare un posto di rilievo, instaurando un dialogo paritario con quelli dell’Europa continentale, in particolare con l’Italia. L’esame delle biblioteche personali e della corrispondenza tra i due studiosi inglesi e i loro colleghi italiani – in particolare S. Riccobono – svelano una fitta rete di contatti e di scambi scientifici particolarmente intensi tra le due Guerre.
