Over the last thirty years, historiography has witnessed a resurgence of interest in two documentary forms that are similar yet different in various aspects: the 'libri iurium' produced by municipal bodies on one hand, and the cartularies of ecclesiastical institutions on the other. While the former are uniquely Italian, the latter characterize the entire European documentary production from the 8th-9th centuries onwards, but in Italy they exhibit specific characteristics that reveal influences - in some cases mutual - with the municipal documentation in register form. In this context, it might be beneficial to investigate the case of Como, where, between the 13th and 14th centuries, both the Commune and the diocese initiated collections: respectively, the first volume of the 'Vetera Monumenta civitatis Novocomi' (Archivio di Stato di Como, Archivio Storico Civico, Volumi, vol. 45) and the 'Collectio privilegiorum Cumanae Ecclesiae' (Milano, Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Manoscritti, G 164 suss. - Como, Archivio storico della Diocesi, Curia vescovile, Antichi Diritti della chiesa comense, volume 1), the latter being one of the rare examples of italian episcopal cartularies production. Analyzing the characteristics and highlighting the responsibilities, selection and ordering criteria, forms of authentication for each collection would not only be useful for assessing the documentary functions and practices of these two institutions, but it would also allow for the examination of differences, points of contact, and signs - if not of direct influence from one to the other - of the notarial and administrative culture from which both civic and religious institutes drew nourishment.
