The aim of this article is to show how the treatment of the fantastic is codified to address the conditions of otherness that affected Salvadoran writers after the signing of the Peace Accords (1992). This is explored through its representation in Horacio Castellanos Moya’s“Amaranta”and Claudia Hernández’s “Jon prefiere que no nos veamos por un tiempo”. The breakdowns experienced bythe characters in these stories, who are also writers, bear witness to the emotional vicissitudesintrinsic to the act of writing in environmentsof precarity, places wherethe consumer practices of globalized capitalism take root.
