The present article focuses on the reception of Seneca’s Apocolocyntosis in Denis Diderot and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Two unique works of these prominent intellectuals are analyzed in order to highlight a lesser-known portion of their extensive oeuvre, while at the same time calling attention to some interesting aspects of the reception of the classics at a time of great cultural revolution, as the Enlightenment grew to the detriment of the Res publica litterarum.
