The essay outlines the tradition of the «Legenda aurea» in Castilian. It consists primarily of two versions that enjoyed a wide success, as demonstrated by the number and quality of extant manuscripts, some of great value, as well as the incunabula and early printed editions up to the second half of the 16th century. In addition, some individual legends are also preserved within miscellanies of various types. Studies in recent decades have made it possible to reconstruct the different profiles of these two translations. On the one hand, the «Leyenda de los santos», is more conservative but results from recognizable selection processes; on the other hand, the «Flos sanctorum» is instead more open to macro-structural additions and substitutions. A reassessment of both versions vis-à-vis the developements of their Latin source, modified over time by Jacobus de Voragine, allows to reconstruct the different textual stage of the models available to the respective authors, and to better understand their strategies.
