The aim of the present study was the evaluation of PGF 2α plasmatic and seminal concentrations during mating in the stallion, to improve the knowledge concerning the role played by this hormone in some mechanisms of male reproductive function. The study was performed on 21 stallions: the reaction time and the main seminal parameters were ascertained, and the 15-ketodihydro-PGF2α plasmatic (10 minutes before, at erection and 10 minutes after mating) and seminal concentrations were evaluated. The results showed the absence of significant differences in 15-ketodihydro-PGF 2α plasma concentrations during mating, but the high 15-ketodihydro-PGF 2α seminal levels (about 20-folds higher) as well as the negative correlation between plasmatic and seminal I5-ketodihydro-PGF 2α concentrations, suggest the possible autocrine/paracrine role of PGF 2α related to mating in the stallion.
